For many teenage mothers, school dropouts, and elderly women in our communities, finding a reliable source of income can be extremely difficult.
At Walk of Life Foundation – Uganda, we believe that meaningful support should go beyond providing immediate assistance. It should also create opportunities for people to develop skills, earn an income, support their families, and build more secure futures.
Our Tailoring Skills & Economic Empowerment Programme was created to give vulnerable women and young people practical skills that can become a pathway to independence.
Who Are We Supporting?
Our programme currently brings together learners from vulnerable backgrounds, including:
- Teenage mothers who need an opportunity to rebuild their lives and support their children.
- School dropouts who have limited opportunities to continue with formal education.
- Elderly women who still want to learn a practical skill and become more economically independent.
- Other vulnerable members of the community who can benefit from vocational skills and livelihood opportunities.
We currently have about 25 learners participating in the programme.
We Have 3 Sewing Machines, But We Need 15
At the moment, Walk of Life Foundation has only 3 sewing machines for approximately 25 learners.
Because of this shortage, learners have to train in shifts and intervals, meaning they cannot all practise at the same time. Limited access to machines slows down their learning and reduces the amount of practical experience each learner can receive.
Our goal is to increase our equipment from 3 sewing machines to 15 machines so that learners can have much better access to hands-on training.
A quality Singer sewing machine costs approximately US$130.
This means that one sewing machine can put a valuable practical tool into the hands of vulnerable women and young people who are working towards a more independent future.

What Will They Learn?
The programme focuses on practical skills that can be used to create income, including:
- Sewing machine operation
- Garment making
- Pattern cutting and design
- Clothing repairs and alterations
- Fabric selection and handling
- Basic fashion and tailoring skills
- Entrepreneurship
- Customer service
- Financial literacy and small-business skills
Our vision is not simply to teach someone how to sew. It is to give them a skill they can use to create opportunities.
The Impact Goes Beyond One Person
When a teenage mother gains a skill and starts earning an income, she can contribute towards her child’s education, food, healthcare, and other household needs.
When a school dropout acquires a practical skill, they gain another pathway towards economic participation.
When an elderly woman develops a skill she can use to earn or contribute to her household, she gains greater dignity and opportunity.
One sewing machine can therefore reach far beyond the person sitting behind it.
